y .i

INSPECTION REPORT - PAGE 2
FILE N0. M-77-222
DATE: September 6, 1985
OBSERVATIONS OF IMPORTANCE:
1. Mining was completed in Stage I in 1981-1982. The southwestern slopes
approximate 3H:1V; the South eastern slope appears steeper than 3H:1V. All
slopes appear stable.
2. A topsoil stockpile was located in Stage I.
3. Topsoil replacement and revegetation has not occurred in Stage I. Some
natural grass and forb invasion was observed on the level pit area. Slopes
were devoid of vegetation.
4. Stage I may be incorporated into an experiment designed to determine
practices utilized to obtain optimal reclamation success.
5. Mining is completed in Stage 0. Slopes approximate the permitted 3H: 1V
grade. Topsoil replacement and revegetation has not occurred. Natural
invasion of fortis and grasses was observed. There is evidence of erosion on
the northern and western pit slopes.
6. Stage 0 will be utilized as an experimental site for the determination of
treatment(s) producing optimal reclamation success.
7. Topsoil and overburden stockpiles were observed.
8. Stage II is currently being excavated. Vertical pit walls were observed.
9. Mr. Brubaker stated that an amendment will be submitted increasing acreage
to facilitate mining with contemporaneous reclamation.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. All reclaimed slopes should be graded to slopes no steeper than 3H:1V to
comply with permit M-77-222 provisions.
2. Topsoil and overburden stockpiles remaining in place over one growing
season should be graded to slopes no steeper than 3H:1V and seeded with a
perennial cover crop for conservation purposes.
3. Please inform the Division of the Stage I status. Will it be incorporated
into the "Treatments for optimal Reclamation Success" experiment, reclaimed
during 1986, etc.
4. Please inform the Division of the proposed Experimental design. I would
be happy to provide input, if requested.
/yt
Doc. No. 3543
