Weather was clear at the time of the inspection.
Chaffee County has been mining this site for many years. The pit mining progresses slowly with the bottom of the pit being
mined last year. This has created a low spot in the bottom that may be difficult to revegetate if the pit is not mined later in such
a way as to create positive drainage.
There is a gully that has formed on the south that is approximately 6 to 8 feet deep and varies from 6 to 15 feet wide and is
approximately 200 feet long. There is not much drainage area above this. However, the operator committed to fixing the gully
this fall. This would consist of cutting off any water flow from the top of the regraded hill, regarding the gully and seeding with
the approved seed mix.
The operator also mined some material on the east side of the pit. Regrading in this area is excellent, however, no topsoil has
been replaced to date. If regrading is to take place on the gully area, it is possible to replace topsoil on this area also so more
area can be seeded this fall. The operator may want to consider this to prevent any weed infestations.
The pit is generally in good shape and well organized with material extraction fairly easy and efficient. Some topsoil is
stockpiled north of the active pit. Removal of this topsoil to retopsoil the graded area to the east may be a good way to get the
topsoil out of the way of future mining activity.
There is a pile of broken concrete to the north of the pit also. Although this is stored on the topsoil stockpile area, this is not
seen as a problem as the county uses the concrete material for road washout stabilization when needed and it will be removed
within a year or two. No more concrete or anything else should be stored on topsoil storage areas in the future.
No problems were noted during the inspection, just maintenance issues relating to the south side gully.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to Carl B. Mount at the Division of Minerals and Geology, Denver Office,
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215, Denver, Colorado 80203, phone number 303-866-3863.
I & E Contact Address cc:
^ CE
NAME Mr. Joe Nelson ^ BL
OPERATOR Chaffee County ^ FS
STREET P.O.Box 699 ^ Hyy
CITY/STATEIZIP Salida.
