INSPECTION REPORT - PAGE 2
FILE N0. 8U-245
DATE: September 15 and 20, 1983
NOTE: Site was inspected initially on September 15, 1983 in order to deal
with the amendment (in progress) and related adequacy concerns which were
expressed in an adequacy letter of September 16, 1983.
A follow-up inspection to verify compliance, record on film existing site
features, and clarify remaining concerns, occurred on September 20, 1983.
OBSERVATIONS OF IidPORTANCE:
1. Site is active. Mining is occurring in an orderly manner.
2. Topsoil, overburden, and clay are stockpiled outside the existing permit
area. The operator indicated that the area outside the permit area was needed
to optimize reclamation material storage and to facilitate extraction and
storage of clay.
3. Operator indicated that the recognition of the need for additional
material storage area necessitated the amendment, but that an unavoidable time
lag occurred between recognition of the need and completion of the amendment.
4. The affected land outside the permit area has not been adversely or
significantly impacted, has been conducted in an orderly and environmentally
sound manner. In all probability, the feature should improve reclamation
potential at the site.
5. Residential areas to the southwest are visually screened from the
operation by the hogback ridges (2).
6. Operator is cooperating fully with the Division.
7. Existing probable violation does not appear significant in light of its
orderly and reclamation-oriented manner and in light of the amendment nearing
approval, which should mitigate the situation.
RECOMI~tEN0ATI0NS:
C~ C
.,~`t~ ~ alc,
Bradford es
Reclamation Specia ist
Doc. No. 6954
