III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made during the
inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection and the facts or
evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This partial inspection of the Carbon Junction Coal Mine was conducted by Wally
Erickson from the DMG Durango Office, 484 Turner Drive, Building F, Suite 101,
Durango, CO 81301, phone (970) 247-5469. Jim Hendricks was not available to
accompany the DMG inspector.
Mine identification sign was posted at the mine entrance. Public access is controlled
by gate and fence, gate was locked. No activites were observed. Reclamation
operations for the Carbon Junction Mine, and mining operations for the adjacent Ewing
Mesa gravel mine, appeared to have ceased for the holiday. Due to the absence of
mine personnel, DMG inspector did not enter beyond the locked gate.
Haul roads and access roads were well maintained. Haul road within permit area is
asphalt surfaced. County road, providing access to the mine entrance, was also
asphalt surfaced.
