Although C ditch was temporarily blocked, it
has since been cleared and positive drainage has been re-established into the
main pit. Groundwater continues to seep into the pit. The amount of inflow
into the pit has increased significantly due to surface runoff. Water is
currently being pumped from the pit into B pond. Ponds A and B have both dis-
charged during this spring runoff season. Pond A stopped discharging on P1arch
23, 1984. Pond B will continue to discharge as a result of the pumping. Water
samples have been, and will continue to be, taken as required by N.P.D.E.S.
permit number CO-0036854.
Walden Coal Company remains committed to stabilizing topsoil stockpile C
through the use of hay bales placed within the rills. This work can not be
done at this time due to muddy conditions at the site. The bales will be staked
into place as soon as conditions permit, prior to the heavy summer rains.
Sage grouse continue to be active in and around the permit area in areas
which are clear of snow.
I hope that this letter has clarified 4lalden Coal Company's position on the
issues discussed in your inspection report. If you have any questions, please
do not hesitate to call.
Sincerely,
kay•James
Resou~~ces hlanager
