MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: ~~-iv~~-nen
INSPECTION DATE: ~~/rip/ns INSPECTORS INITIALS: KAP
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was performed as part of the four-year monitoring program conducted by the Division of
Minerals and Geology. Present at the inspection were Kate Pickford, DMG, and Mathew Valdez,
Costilla County. Weather at the time of the inspection was clear, calm, and approximately 80 degrees.
2. An appropriate sign is posted at the mine entrance and fence lines mark the boundaries. There is some
standing water in the bottom of the pit that Mr. Valdez indicated is a result of nearby irrigation. Mr.
Valdez stated that the presence of the water is temporary and it will dry up in about a month.
3. No topsoil is stored at the site. Mr. Valdez stated that the county owns property adjacent to the county
roads from which topsoil will be stripped and transported to the site for reclamation. The permit does
not specify that topsoil will be retained onsite, only that the overburden will be returned to the pit and
graded, and reseeding and fertilizing will take place with natural plant cover. A past enforcement
action addressing this issue resulted in a plan indicating that the county will be hauling topsoil from off
site in order to fulfill reclamation requirements.
4. Approximately two thirds of the highwalls are graded adequately for reclamation. Vegetation is
present on the slopes along the northern two thirds of the pit, but weeds are present at the site.
Perennial grasses will need to be better established on all pit slopes and the remainder of the site prior
to release.
5. A small pile of asphalt material remains along the southern edge of the excavated area. Based on
earlier inspection reports, the bulk of this material appears to have been removed from the site. The
remainder of the material should be removed, however, before the site is released.
I & E Contact Address Cc: ^ CE
^ BL
NAME: Mathew Valdez ^ FS
^ HW
OPERATOR: Costilla County ^ HMWMD (CH)
STREET: P (~ Rnx 130 ^ SE
^ WQCD (CH)
CITY/STATE/ZIP: Stan I ui Cn 81159
Z X Other: Harry Posey, DMG
