(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: M-7977-387
INSPECTION DATE: 9-28-nt INSPECTORS INITIALS: ._j~
OBSERVATIONS
Completed a partial inspection of this operation as part of a Mined Land Reclamation Board directive to inspect every mine
in the state at least once every four years. The site was last inspected June 17, 1998.
This is a 30 acre Regular 112 permit located about 5 miles northwest of Holly, Co.
A mine ID sign has been placed at the entrance of the site. The permit boundaries are adequately delineated.
The operator is actively mining the site in the central part of the permit area. It appears the east permit area has been mined
out since a large (10 +/- acres) deep pit remains. The pit was excavated to shale leaving 30 + foot highwalls. The south
3.5+/- acres of the pit contain ponded water which, the operator says, is tail water from upland irrigated fields. The depth
of the pond is not known. This is going to be noted as a problem on page 3 of this report since this is supposed to be a dry
pit (per the approved permit). Also, a copy of this report will be sent to the State Engineer for their review.
The ponded water problem needs to be resolved. The operator must submit a technical revision addressing the situation.
The revision must be submitted to the DMG by December 4, 2001. There are several options, including backfilling the pit to
a depth which would eliminate the water or, revising the reclamation plan to include the pond (water rights may be an
issue) since the approved post-mining land use includes wildlife habitat. Since the highwalls need to be graded to 3:1 or 5:1
slopes anyway (to meet the approved reclamation plan), backfilling may be the most cost effective method to resolve the
problem. However, the operator may decide to propose other resolutions, which may be just as effective as backfilling the
pit.
Did not observe any other problems at this site.
The site is located in Section 6, T235, R42W, Prowers County.
~~~ ~~ ~
700o IG7o 0000 otoSq ~soy-
I & E Contact Address James Stevens
cc: ^ CE
NAME: Mark Dorenkamp ^ BL
^ FS
OPERATOR: ProwersCounty ^ HW
^ HMWMD (CH)
STREET: 301 S.
