(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-1977-346
INSPECTION DATE 01/07/03
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS ESC
This was an inspection of the Boettcher Gypsum Quarry (Goodwin) conducted by Erica Crosby
of the Division of Minerals and Geology. Gordon Benton with Holnam, Inc. was present
during the inspection.
A 112 Mining and Reclamation Permit was issued to Ideal Basic Industries, Inc. on October
10, 1978 for a permit area of 110 acres. The permit was transferred to Holnam, Inc. on
March 23, 1990. The operator is in the process of transferring the permit to Holcim (US),
Inc. but the application was deemed incomplete on August 5, 2002 because a performance
warranty was not properly executed.
The Boettcher Gypsum Quarry is located 9 miles north of Buckeye in Larimer County. The
site has been in temporary cessation status (TC) since May 23, 1996. According to Gordon
Benton, all of the Holnam sites in Larimer County shut down on September 1, 2002. Holnam
will either sell the properties or commence reclamation over the next 5 years.
The gypsum occurs on an outcrop and is mined in 12-15 foot thick beds. The west side of
the quarry has been reclaimed to 3h:ly slopes. A rock pile at the base of the slope will
need to be removed upon final reclamation of the site. The area has not been revegetated
to date. No annual or noxious weeds were present, but revegetation efforts should be
initiated this spring to control erosion and prevent the spread of weeds. The operator
should refer to the UADA recommended seed mixture in the original application to be
applied on site.
On the east side of the quarry mining occurred on the exposed gypsum outcrop. A number of
benches and highwalls remain that need to be reclaimed. The reclamation plan states that
reclamation will be accomplished by smoothing the contours of the quarries to blend with
surrounding terrain and breaking down any walls left to a slope not exceeding 3h:ly.
The Division currently holds a financial warranty in the amount of $38,000.00. This
amount is adequate for the disturbance noted on site.
I & E Contact Address
^ CE
NAME Mr. Gordon Benton ^ BL
OPERATOR Holnam, Inc. ^ FS
STREET P.O.
