,. .
INSPECTION REPORT - PAGE 3
FILE N0. 77-215
DATE: August 2, 1985

9. The new tailings disposal dam was inspected. The dam has had a slurry
cut-off wall installed to control seepage. Numerous piezometers are
along and below the dam. These are monitored for water levels and water
quality. A seepage dam (gravel drain?) is constructed below the dam for
pumping seepage back into the dam. It was discussed that water balance
of tf~e system is controlled by seepage pumpback with rate between 40 to
100 gpm. The dam is very stable and has successful revegetation on the
crest and downstream face.
10. Drainage control around the dam was partially inspected. The inspectors
noted an area on the east side of the dam that needed to be maintained
in order to assure adequate upland diversion. See recommendation no. 3.
11. The inspectors appreciate the cooperation of the operator during this
inspection.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. Properly store and place chemical barrels in the chemical storage area
west of the mill building to minimize possible contact with runoff.
This work should be performed prior to September 1, 1985. Please
respond.
2. Mr. Danni stated that Homestake will be submitting an amendment on this
site. It was discussed that the amendment should include a chemical
storage and barrel disposal plan. In addition, a description of the
mine refuse and trash disposal plan should be included.
3. Inspect all drainage control ditches and berms at the mine and millsite
and the tailings dam. Grade and/or maintain as required. This should
be completed by September 1, 1985. Please respond.
cc: Mr. Richard Bolling, Homestake Mining Co.
2770E/cj
