(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-82-186
INSPECTION DATE 8/25/98 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS AJW
OBSERVATIONS
This was a follow-up inspection conducted by Tony Waldron of DMG. The site was inspected on
May 4, 1998 and two problems were identified which required both on-the-ground work and the
submittal of a revision to the permit.
The first problem concerned the lack of boundary markers at the pit to properly delineate the
permit area. The operator has addressed this problem by marking the four corners of the
permit area with automobile tires partially buried into the surface of the ground so that the
exposed portion was displayed in an arch at each corner.
The second problem concerned topsoil removal and storage procedures at this pit. The
operator did not have a defined procedure in their permit application and was not properly
salvaging and stockpiling topsoil during mining operations. Therefore, this was cited as a
problem and the operator was required to revise their permit application to include topsoil
removal, storage and replacement procedures. This information was submitted to the Division
office on July 29, 1998 and clarified that topsoil will indeed be salvaged, stockpiled and
protected with a temporary seed mix until needed for reclaiming the pit.
It was also noted in the topsoil submittal that mining will be occurring to depth of
approximately 35 feet. At this depth, mining will have to cease when the top of the
advancing highwall is approximately 50-60 feet from the permit boundary in order to be able
to acheive 3H:1V slopes without backfilling. The highwall is not currently within this
distance, however, this should be monitored carefully so as to be able to cut and fill from
the top of the highwall down at the end of mining instead of unnecessary and costly
backfilling activities from the toeslope up.
I & E Contact Address cc: Sim Stevens
^ CE
NAME Walt Isenbart ^ BL
OPERATOR Kit Carson County ^ FS
STREET P.O.
