(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: nn_~eeR_nre
INSPECTION DATE: t]6/~zrn5 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: KI S
OBSERVATIONS
This was a "pre-operation" inspection prompted by Grand Gravel's application to convert their existing 1 l Oc
reclamation permit to a 1 12c reclamation permit. Eight of the 9.57 acres to be added to the permit area for the
conversion are already permitted as a 1 1 1 operation by Lafarge as the Parshall Pit, under Permit No. M-2005-024.
Division inspector Kathleen Sullivan met Ms. Marilyn Curry and Mr. Richard Curry at the site. Mr. Curry accompanied
Sullivan on the inspection. The Currys own the land that is the subject of this permit and conversion.
The identification signs for both operations were properly posted at the entrance to the mine site and the affected
area boundaries were clearly marked. Stakes marking the proposed boundaries for the 112 conversion permit also
are in place. An approximately 5 feet by 575 feet (0.05-acre) strip of vegetation has been scraped just outside the
western boundary of the 1 1 1 site by Lafarge at the request of the landowner-the Currys, as confirmed by a July 14,
2005 letter from Mr. Curry. The Division has determined this is not a problem. A truck trailer and some approximately
60-inch diameter piping for the asphalt hot plant was set outside the permit boundary on the 1 1 1 site. These items
had been removed by Lafarge by a July 13, 2005, inspection of the site.
Mr. Curry reported that the only seed to grow on the large topsoil pile on the western portion of the pit during the
drought has been western wheatgrass. The pile was reseeded last year. The vegetative cover is adequately
stabilizing the topsoil pile. Mr. Curry indicated that thistle and other noxious weeds are cut down as they appear.
Mr. Curry stated that they plan to start reclaiming -grading and topsoiling -the north end of the pit this fall. To
ensure no topsoil is lost, the operator should maintain a 10 to 15-feet buffer of topsoil salvage in the advancing area.
Three large tanks on site were empty water tanks. A diesel fuel storage tank on the old pit site was in aplastic-lined
bermed containment area. A larger diesel fuel tank in use on the 1 1 1 site was also in a bermed,plastic-lined area.
Mr. Curry inquired as to what would be necessary to amend the conversion application to add approximately 100
feet on the west side. This information has since been communicated by telephone and in the July 5, 2005
Adequacy Review letter.
A small portable crusher and screen is on the 1 l Oc site. Amore extensive screening operation is underway on the
111 site operated by Lafarge. The pit at the 111 site is excavated 1 1 to 12 feet deep.
(Please see the 7 pages of photos that accompany this inspection.)
No problems were noted related to Grand Gravel and the conversion application
I & E Contact Address
NAME: Mr. Richard Currv
OPERATOR: Grand Gravel
STREET: P_n_ Rox 936
CITY/STATE/ZIP: Krammlinh~Cn Rn4.59
cc: Julie Mikulas
Lafarge West, Inc. -Highway
1800 N.
