III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the
inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a complete inspection of the Sunlight Mine conducted by Erica Crosby of DMG. The
mine is a bond forfeiture site, therefore, no company representative was present during the
inspection. It was snowing during the inspection. Roughly 2 feet to 3 feet of snow was present
on site.
Roads Access to the mine site was not possible by vehicle. Both upper and lower mine areas
were accessed by foot.
Hydrologic Balance The sediment pond was viewed from the road, and was under snow cover.
No problems could be detected. All diversions and berms on site were under snow cover and
could not be assessed.
Backfillina & Grading The backfilled portals and fan appear stable and no subsidence features
were noted.
Processing Waste Some of the crib-wall timbers were loose and refuse material continues to be
washed through the timbers and collected in the road ditch. The refuse eventually leads to the
sediment pond. Gullies one to two feet deep were noted throughout the refuse pile and smaller
rills were noted throughout the entire pile. The erosion features do not appear to have
progressed since the last complete inspection (October, 19971.
