I will address the two problems areas cited in the Report
that was issued as part of this inspection.
I. Knapweed was observed at the site. Corrective Action: A weed control plan
developed in consultation with, and approved by the appropriate local weed
control authority must be submitted as a technical revision to this permit.
Please see the letter written by A. C. Baldwin that is attached to this response. Mr.
Baldwin and I visited the Corey Pit on September 10, 2002 and examined the site for
noxious species. During that visit the only noxious weed species identified by Mr.
Baldwin was a Canadian Thistle infestation near the western part of the permit area. I
looked for knapweed species with Mr. Baldwin and none was found on the permit
site. During our visit I mentioned to Mr. Baldwin that United Companies has done
applications of Curtail brand herbicide in Mesa County to control knapweed. Mr.
Baldwin said that Curtail would also be a good product to use for control of the
Canadian Thistle. The main patch of Canadian Thistle that we found was not located
on the permit site, but 20-80 west of the road at the west side of the reclaimed
highwall area.
Mr. Robert Corey of Montrose, CO is the landowner and the holder of the
Reclamation Permit of this gravel mining site. In mid-July of this year, United
Companies' gravel lease with Mr. Corey expired and will not be renewed. Mr. Corey
has been negotiating with Western Gravel Inc. to amend the existing Permit or apply
for a new Permit at the Corey Pit. This will be done to add gravel mining area and
resource reserves and allow Western Gravel, Inc. to continue mining the site. During
an on site meeting on June 17, 2002, Mr. Corey, Ms. Judy DeVincentis and Mr.
Milan Hawxby of Western Gravel, Mr. Mike Ripp of MVR Resources and I discused
some of the development possiblities at the Corey Pit. My understanding is that all of
the existing disturbed area (Corey Pit #3) will be incorporated in the next permit. An
area at the toe of the reclaimed gravel mining site will be used for gravel processing
B+lld storage. Also, there maybe gravel remaining at the north part of the permit area
sEP 2 z zooz
d~mYd Junction Field Office
®Ivisfon of Minerals 15 Geoic~y
