the sole underground opening. If there are other vent holes, etc., associated with this operation which have not been
documented in other permit files, please provide the necessary additional information.
Please explain what the "secondary" road which enters the site from the southwest is, and what the appazent upper
bench is for.
The alignment of the "primary" access road entering the site from the northwest does not match the alignments
depicted on previous maps (1980 and 1997). Were those road alignments abandoned and/or reclaimed? Did they
exist?
There are no overhead electric power supply structures shown. Is this an oversight, or do none exist?
It is assumed that all areas shown in brown with hachures denoti; waste rock dumps, which are to be graded to 2:1
slopes or less as part of final reclamation.
I agree that the new surface detail superimposed on the map base must be tied back in to the topography, for both
the final mining and reclamation maps. Please be reminded that reclamation maps should depict only those features
which will remain onsite after reclamation is finished. All roads, buildings, berms, etc., that aze to be removed
should not be included on the reclamation maps.. Stormwater controls which are to remain should be shown.
'T'here is a delineation presumed to show the outer"footprint" of all past disturbance, in addition to the labeled
affected area boundary. This irregular footprint is entirely contained within the polygon of the affected area
boundary. However, the boundaries were never marked on'the gtound, and it is fortunate-that mining activities
never exceeded the boundary. It will be important that all permit boundaries for this permit (and the other 110
permits) be marked. (The affected area boundaries for the 1,12 permits must also be marked.) Please explain why
the irregular disturbance area delineation contains only a part of the catchment berm at the toe of the waste dump.
Summary
These comments and questions will hopefully assist you in finalizing the maps for this permit, by explaining how
this Division proceeds in determining which areas and features are to be included in the bonded reclamation
liability, and within the boundary on the maps. Your preliminary map is a very good start, and should take minimal
effort to reach a complete and adequate stage for our uses.
I look forward to receiving the revisions. Please ensure that you submit all maps, especially oversized maps (larger
than 11" x 17") m duplicate. Additionally, all final maps are to be signed by the prepazer. As before, please do not
hesitate to contact me if there are questions. I may be reached, and/or the maps mailed to the Division's Durango
field office: 701 Camino del Rio, Room 125, Durango, CO 81301; telephone 970/247-5103 or fax 970/247-5104.
Sincerely,
Bob Oswald
Environmental Protection Specialist ".
A:\topaz map/rco
