.'
III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the
inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
On April 21, 1997, William J. Carter from the Division of Minerals and Geology performed a
partial inspection of the Hawk's Nest Mine. During the inspection, the weather was cloudy with
rain mixed with snow. Much of the vegetation throughout the site was starting to tum green.
Roads•
The gravel road into the substation and sedimentation pond was in good and stable condition.
Hydrolo2ic Balance:
• Both seeps at the east portal continue to dischazge.
• The sedimentation pond contains about one foot of water along the southern half of the
pond.
• The primary spillway of the sedimentation pond needs to be cleared of vines, but this can
only be done when the river recedes.
Backtill and Gradine:
No settling or slumping was noted at the portal locations during this inspection.
Fish and Wildlife:
Current wildlife activity continues to be apparent throughout the sight.
Reveaetation•
The east mine area will continue to erode until a dense vegetative cover is established.
Slides and Damaee:
CDOT has not yet pulled the ditches along the north side of old State Highway 133, therefore the
two slump areas on each side of the east portal are blocking part of the barrow ditch.
