MINE ID k OR PROSPECTING ID p M-81-243
INSPECTION DATE 5/15198
(Page 21
OBSERVATIONS

INSPECTOR'S INITIALS WHE
This inspection occurred as part of DMG routine monitoring plan for permitted operations. Ed
Settle accompanied the DMG inspector throughout the inspection. The South Fruita Gravel Pit is
approved for conventional excavation of sand(gravels and material processing, 51 acres affected
area. Disturbance at any given time is limited by the phased mine plan. DMG holds 539,995
financial warranty. Mine status is active.
Signs & Markers -Mine identification sign, required by Rule 3.1.12, was posted at the mine
entrance. Boundaries of the affected area were delineated by fencing and irrigation/drainage
canals. Public access to active areas were controlled by fencing and gate, gate was open.
Phase IArea -Extraction and processing operations were active at phase I area. Portable asphalt
plant was installed within the pit area. Haul truck traffic was continuous throughout the time of
the inspection. Mining activities appeared confined to approved areas. Mining activities had
progressed from the east side of the pit to the western 1 /3 of the phase I area. Reclamation
backfilling, grading and topsoil replacement appeared near completion for the eastern 1 /3 of the
phase I area.
Portions of the phase I area, mined prior to 1984 and located adjacent to the Colorado River, had
been flooded during high flows in 1984. Erosion from the 1984 flood stage resulted in an overflow
channel through the previously mined areas. Operator modified the Reclamation Plan from "pond"
to "overflow channel" for approximately 10 acres of phase I area through AM-01.
Phase 11 & 111 Areas -Mining activities had not progressed to phase II and III areas.
Financial Warranty - Phase I area includes 34 acres, of which 10 acers are approved as an
overflow channel and 22 acres will result in a pond. DMG has reviewed the cost of reclamation
associated with existing disturbances and has determined that the current financial warranty, in
the amount of 539,995, is adequate to ensure reclamation.
cc: Tom Gillis, DMG
I & E Contact Address
^ CE
NAME Ed Settle ^ BL
OPERATOR Grand Junction Concrete Pioe Co. ^ FS
STREET P.O.
