Without being further affected by mining, however, its reclamation will consist
only of gravel removal, ripping, finish grading, topsoiling, and revegetation (including weed
control). The north-south road separating the SE pond from this processing area will
probably remain (per the landowner's wishes), though its actual location and width should be
better defined in the overall reclamation scheme. There were no other structures or
significant stockpiles present.
To the west is the remainder of the permit area, and consists of three large ponds and their
earthen banks. The ponds were created by mining deep enough to expose groundwater, then
grading the banks to a specified gradient, usually 3:1. The ponds have not been disturbed
in several years. The banks have some desirable species growing on them, mostly woody
species such as cottonwood, rabbitbrush and willow, and some of the banks have a fair cover
of grass. This is mostly saltgrass near the waterline. A significant amount of the banks,
however, are weedy and in need of weed control and active revegetation to be implemented.
The weeds consist of annuals, mostly kochia and russian thistle. Dirt roads run along the
tops of most of these earthen embankments, and it is assumed that the roads will remain. The
permit area boundary in this portion where the three western ponds are is at the top of the
embankments which separate the ponds from the Colorado River.
Reclamation therefore will involve those areas which slope toward the ponds, above the high
water line. There is a significant amount of wooded areas which need not be redisturbed, so
the areas to be revegetated with the approved species mix will be those areas with either
only weeds or no vegetation at all. Some of these areas have been neglected for several
years, with no active or ongoing revegetation efforts. The operator is reminded that all
affected areas must be reclaimed, and a bond will be required for all outstanding tasks until
they are satisfactorily completed.
This office will perform another cost estimate of the reclamation tasks, which will include
the existing and additional areas. The figures will be sent to the operator for review. The
operator may influence the total amount by undertaking reclamation tasks, and by limiting the
amount of disturbance in the new area.
There were no other items noted and no further problems. Please see the last page for the
corrective action for the ID sign problem.
