Inspector told operator they might expect an inspection the following week.
Observed pipeline rip-rap covering in progress in lower Windy Gulch (below 9360 level), nearly completed topsoil covering
of 9360 bench, nearly completed pipeline and rip-rap covering construction in upper Windy Gulch (below 9700 level), and
nearly completed topsoil covering in lower tailings pond.
9360 bench covering drains generally toward the gulch and northward, which is obverse to direction of Windy Gulch flow.
The bench area appears to have a depression on the upper end of the drainage area which, if present, would pond water
causing recharge of surface water through part of the reclaimed tailings. All areas are topsoiled except area beneath the
stored rip-rap on upstream edge of bench. Otherwise, topsoiling appears adequate.
Rip-rap covering over pipeline in lower Windy Gulch looks adequate.
Parts of geomembrane above pipeline in upper Windy Gulch (9700 level) were still exposed at time of inspection;
construction crew indicated this would probably be covered with rip-rap before end of week. Private access road to this
area is posted, but otherwise open. Two single lane roads occur on the eastern side of the reclaimed dump, and would be
accessible to traffic by crossing reclaimed gulch. Whether such traffic would be precluded by items of remaining
reclamation, and whether such traffic might damage the geomembrane are open to question.
The lower tailings pond was apparently completely topsoiled. An 8-12 foot deep depression behind the dam will cause
surface water to impound in the tailings, discharging through the permanent discharge ditch only after heaviest
precipitation or snowmelt. At issue is whether this pond was to be afree-draining surface or not.
~,{~". ~ 7881 2518 00f]4 2783 1548
I & E Contact Address
NAME: Alan Cox
OPERATOR: Barrick
STREET: 6719-D Academy Rd NE
CITY/STATE/ZIP: Albuquerque.
