General Comments
During a routine inspection tour of the Canon City area MLRD inspectors
Gregg Squire and Brian Munson made a telephone call to the Denver MLRD
office. At that time they were told that a suspected illegal coal mine had
been reported to the Denver office. Therefore, the inspectors and Mr. Gary
Fritz of the U.S. OSM, who was accompanying them on the inspection tour,
decided to investigate the reported operation.
When the inspectors arrived at the entrance to the access road to the old
Jewell Strip mine they observed that an old loadout area had recently been
used to stockpile fresh coal. About three dump truck loads of coal had been
placed on the pad. Beyond the pad it was observed that the old access road
had been regraded and that a bulldozer had recently traveled on the road.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
