JUN-23-1998 16 ~ 30 ~ BR I GHT III I I I I II I I I IIII III
~ ... •
Janice C. Derskam
1206 Weld Couary Road 23-3/4
Brighton, CO 80601
(30i~)659-5543
June 23, 1998
• Bruce Humphries, Supervisor
Division of Minerals and Geology
State of Colondo
1313 Sherman Sueet, Room 215
Deaver, CO 80203
Dear Mr. Humphries:

303 655 2152 P.02i02
With this letter I am requesting assistance from your office in mitigation of a water problem
on my farm located in southern Weld County with the physical address of 1206 Weld Couary Road
23-3/4, $righton, Colorado 80601. There is a groundwater pond, wetland area, and slough located oa
my property. Directly south of these area is a gavel opention conducted by the firm of Hall Irwin
that has been in openrion for approximately two months. They aze in the process of digging a ten acre
water ski lake permitted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer. Currently the excavation is a dry pit
with the water being sucked out or dammed up upstream from my property.
I have been out of tows for several weeks. When I returned I discovered my pond dried up
with the exception of a small, deep whole dug for the wintering of fish. The water in the slough azea
his lowered greatly u well. The slough his not been affected u adversely as the pond due to the fan
irrigation waste water is duected into the slough.
I have been on this property for over eighteen yeas and this pond may have been low during
exceptionally dry years, but never totally dry. The pond is augmented by an irrigation ditch on the
property that runs above the pond and leaches through the gavel soils. The ditch his been running
for several months now and the pond is still dry. Consequently I feel there mutt be some outside fora
such u the gavel operation affecting this area.
These areas are of importance to my farm in both terms of sub-irrigation of crops and
provision of wildlife habitat for fish and waterfowl. The pond and slough usually hold a supply of
valuable water for sub-irrigation of valuable nursery crops.
I contacted Jeff Gregg of Hall Irwin and requested he look into this matter. He visiud the area
with me, said the pond wu more than 600 feet away from their opentioa, said it has been a dry year,
and, they were not responsible for the death of my pond.
I respectfully request that your office investigate this adverse affect on wetlands, wildlife, and
crop production on a project permitted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
My thanks to you and yow staff far any usistaace that you might provide me.
•
S' ely, ,
Janice C.
