III. COMMENTS - COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations
made during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during
the inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a complete inspection conducted by Kent Gorham of the Colorado Division
of Minerals and Geology. This former underground site is entirely reclaimed.
Ground conditions were dry and the weather was hot.
Availability of Records
The public copy of the mine records is now kept at the Las Animas County Clerk and
Recorder Office in Trinidad. All required records were found as detailed on page
2a of this report.
Hydrologic Balance
The sediment pond held water slightly below the invert of the primary riser tube.
The trash rack was intact and clear of debris. Cattails now cover almost 100 of
the pond area.
Processing Waste
The slope of the refuse highwall was traversed on foot. No sign of slumps.
slides, or damage was noted. Contour furrows appeared generally in good
condition. Seeps or springs were not noted from the refuse highwall area. No
breaches in the 100-year ditch above the refuse slope were observed. Vegetation
is well established along this ditch, especially in the lower reaches.
Fish and Wildlife
The landowner reported that elk are visiting the reclaimed area each evening.
Revegetation
Annual weeds dominate the interseeded portion of the refuse highwall slope. Cicer
milkvetch, western wheatgrass, and smooth brome were observed, especially on the
flatter areas. These plants have set seed heads. Warm season grasses have not
yet begun to set seed. Noxious weeds were not apparent. Ground conditions are
very dry and plants are beginning to show signs of drought stress.
Overall, the site appeared in good condition for the summer season.
3
