(Page 21

MINE ID p OR PROSPECTING ID k M-96-031
INSPECTION DATE 5-28-96 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS SSS
OBSERVATIONS
This was apre-operational inspection of the proposed permit area for the Weimer No. 2 gravel pit located approximately 3 miles
southwest of Nucla, Colorado in Montrose County. The site was accessed by a two track road approaching the site from the north
and east. The site is typified by a sagebrush flat with no permanent manmade structures located within 200 feet of the proposed
boundaries. The four corners of the proposed square permit area were marked with lath and surveyor's tape. Topographic relief
is negligible except for a minor Swale on the northwest corner of the site. There are a few small 12' - 3' deep x 2' - 3' wide) gullies
across the area that appear to be quite old and somewhat stabilized by vegetation.
Some of the vegetation noted includes big sagebrush, rubber rabbitbrush, blue grams, and Indian ricegrass. Vegetative cover is
roughly estimated at 40 - 50 percent.
A new road is to be built for access to the site from the northwest. The access road would connect to a county road several
hundred feet northwest of the site. The applicant was informed that a road installed specifically for use as an access road for the
pit would need to be included in the permit area for the operation. The applicant stated that the surface property owner had already
approached the county for approval to build a road here for his use to haul water to the site for livestock. The site is apparently
used for a livestock wintering ground. A letter from the landowner to this effect, stating that the road is to remain as a permanent
feature after mining, to be used for this purpose, will need to be submitted to the Division. Without this letter, the road must be
included within the proposed permit area and financial warranty for reclamation of the road must be included in the reclamation bond
for this site.
Be aware that addition of the road into the permit area may increase the permit acreage over the 9.9 acre limit requiring the applicant
to submit an application fora 1 1 2 permit for the site, or revise the proposed 11012) permit boundaries to allow inclusion of the road
while maintaining acreage less than 10 acres.
I & E Contact Address
NAME
OPERATOR
STREET
CITY/STATE/ZIP
Lee Sutherland
Sutherland Brothers,lnc.
P.0.
