III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the
inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
On April 25, ]997, William J. Caner from the Division of Minerals and Geology performed a
complete inspection of the Ohio Creek # 2 Mine in Gunnison County. This is a revoked mine,
and therefore no company representative was present.
Signs and Markers:
• Because this is a revoked mine, it is important to change the mine identification signs to
reflect that the Division of Minerals and Geology is the point of contact. The information
for these signs will be collected and presented [o enable proper sign construction and
placement.
• Existing signs aze properly placed and readable, note changes needed in the statement
above.
Roads:
The Gunnison County road to the [nine is in excellent condition except for the muddy conditions
adjacent to Mrs. Staples home.
Hydrologic Balance:
• Due [o the muddy, and frozen conditions, as well as the water existing in the pond at the
time of this inspection, it was not practical to determine if the primary dewatering pipe
was obstructed. The condition of this pipe, and any required maintenance will be
performed as soon as possible.
• The Sedimentation pond contained approximately one foot of water at the time of
inspection.
• The condition of the sedimentation pond is stable at this time.
• The drainage/collection ditch above the sedimentation pond is showing some siltation,
and will require minor cleaning during the next inspection.
• Minor rills have developed on the hill below the portal area and will require some
correction during the next inspection.
Backtill and Grading:
Other then the rills described above, the site shows no signs of erosion or slumping during this
inspection.
Topsoil:
The topsoil pile appears to be stable and well covered with vegetation at this time.
