III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations
made during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken
during the inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a complete inspection of the East Side Mine conducted by Jim Burnell of CDMG, on
Wednesday 17 May 2006. The weather was hot and sunny. This mine site was deserted.
The permit sign was present at the entrance road and the information was correct. The other signs
were erected in the appropriate locations.
The site is well vegetated with western wheatgrass, sagebrush, rabbitbrush, some milkvetch and
some Indian rice grass and lactuca along with lesser proportions of other fortis. There was a good bit
of cheatgrass at the north end of the mine site.
The former pond site has been reclaimed. That, too, was well vegetated, although there were some
patches of cheatgrass. The outslope of the site below the pond was stable with no signs of erosion.
There was a black plastic pipe attached to the pipe from the reclaimed portal. There was no water
discharging and no sign that any water had, but this should be removed.
There was no sign of erosion or instability on the site, including the rip-rapped channels running
down the steep slope to the creek. The creek was running strong.
Records were checked at the Garfield County Courthouse. See the attached sheet for details.
