Cattany
Division Director
/ Natural Resource Trustee
Line Camp Pit; M-20~01~-0_01'
Thank you for including the Division of Minerals and Geology on your December 10 letter to
Montezuma County Commissioners about the above-captioned operation.
You referred to a DMG inspection that responded to Pat Kantor's (GEAR) earlier letter. The
inspection lays out part of our inspection and enforcement history at this site, and highlights some
of the vegetation problems that the operator has experienced.
DMG understands that the operator has seeded the topsoil at least three times -two times during
the recent drought -and has initiated weed controls at least twice. As you have probably seen,
the area around the gravel operation is weedy, and as the disturbed ground at the mine is
advantageous for new weed growth, we too are concerned about the overall weed management
program that is underway.
We appreciate CFAR's continued interest in this site, and we understand your concerns.
Meanwhile, we feel the operator is doing an adequate job managing the weeds and is making
adequate attempts to establish acceptable vegetation on the topsoil. The weed management
appears compatible with the County's requirements, and we believe that with continued diligence,
the soils and other disturbed ground will develop aself-sustaining, low weed cover that is
acceptable to the community. Of course it will take time to establish an adequate successful
vegetation cover, but as long as the topsoil stocks remain erosionally stable, we feel that with
adequate moisture and vegetation management the revegetation efforts wilt succeed.
Please feel free to contact me if you have further comments or need assistance. 303-866-3927.
Sincerely,
Harry H.
