(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-1985-170
INSPECTION DATE 9/19/03 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS GRM
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was conducted as part of the normal monitoring program established by the Colorado Division of
Minerals and Geology. A joint inspection involving representatives ofthe Colorado Department ofTransportation
(CDOT), the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Division of Minerals and Geology was conducted to
review present conditions and discuss the possibilities of expanding the current permit azea.
The current pit conditions has an approximately 50 foot highwall with a bench above to a smaller cut. Overall the
estimated length of the highwall is 300 feet or so. The site material is used to augment repairs to the state highway
in the Douglas Pass area. The burnt shale provides the right grade of fill rock for slide repairs. Some rock was
stockpiled on the south end of the work azea.
The main focus of this visit was to discuss the possibilities of expanding the current permitted site for the purpose of
gaining enough material and room to better reclaim the site. In the pit's current configuration, the highwall is stable,
but not necessarily safe for equipment or crews. There is also the issue of being able to blend the mine disturbance
back into the natural topography as it now sits. What CDOT proposes appeazs to change the permit boundaries to
better conform to the BLM approved use boundaries. The idea is to gain room at the top of the ridge to push back
the existing mined slope to a more agreeable angle. The adjusted slope could be shaped to match surrounding
features such as rock faces exposed between alluvial fans or some other desirable reclamation. The Division has no
problem with the proposed expansion, but suggests that CDOT get final cleazance from the BLM prior to submitting
an amendment to the application. Also, be aware that should the total disturbance be over 9.9 acres, a conversion
from a 110 to a 112c would be necessary not an amendment.
No other issues were noted or observed at this time.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to Russ Means at the Division of Minerals and Geology, Grand Junction
Field Office, 101 South 3rtl Street, Room 301, Grand Junction, Colorado 81501, phone no. 970-241-1117.
I & E Contact Address cc:
^ CE
NAME: Rex Goodrich ^ BL -Bruce Fowler
OPERATOR: CDOT ^ FS
STREET: 222 S. 6'" St. Rm 317 ^ HW
CITY/STATE/ZIP: Grand Junction.
