• (Page 2) •
n ,
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-B1-075
INSPECTION DATE 05/25/99 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS ESC
OBSERVATIONS
This was an inspection of the Phillips Stone Quarry conducted by Erica Crosby of the Colorado
Division of Minerals and Geology. Joe Phillips was present during the inspection. Weather
conditions on site were clear and warm. Ground conditions were dry. The Division last
inspected the site in 1993.
The site is approximately 2 34 miles north from Lyons, Colorado southwest of Noland Road. The
site is divided into two separate quarries for a total permit area of 3.0 acres. A permit
I.D. sign was posted at the entrance to the lower quarry. The lower quarry is roughly 1.9
acres in size. Permit boundary markers were noted, and are in good repair.
Two workers during the inspection were actively mining the lower quarry. The highwall is
right up to the west permit boundary. The highwall height is estimated between 25 to 30
feet. Reclamation has been done on site, mainly using old rock piles to fill in holes and
gullies. The operator would like to enlarge the quarry towards the west. The operator will
need to amendment the existing 110-permit in order to increase the permit and affected area
beyond the approved 3.0 acres. Under a 110 Construction Materials Permit, the operator may
permit and mine up to 9.9 acres in size. Anything larger than 9.9 acres will require a 112
permit. A copy of the relevant rules for amending a 110-permit is enclosed.
The upper quarry is in the shape of a triangle and is roughly 1.1 acres in size. Mining was
not taking place in the upper quarry during the time of the inspection. The rock mined in
this area is much smaller than in the lower quarry, and is used for patios. Mining follows
the natural contour of the rock, and little to no highwall exists.
I & E Contact Address cc
NAME Joe Phillips
OPERATOR Phillips Stone Company
STREET 7650 Ute Hwv
CITY/STATE/ZIP Longmont, CO 80503
Carl Mount, DMG
^ CE
^ BL
^ FS
^ HW
^ HMWMD (CH)
^ SE
