III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations
made during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during
the inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Kent Gorham of the Colorado Division of Minerals
and Geology. The Rimrock Mine consists of approximately seven acres of reclamation. The
weather was cold and overcast and ground conditions were snow-covered.
Hvdrolooic Balance
The single sediment pond at the site was dry. Cooler temperatures will likely prevent any
significant daily runoff in the near future. Snowpack is about two inches except in shaded
areas where more snow has accumulated.
Reveoetation
The landowner, George Montoya, was at the entrance gate feeding some 30 head of cattle.
We discussed briefly the results of the Division's vegetation sampling conducted at the site
this last summer. I again re-iterated the need to coordinate any grazing with the operator.
He would be interested in grazing for about a week prior to moving the cattle to higher
ground.
Vegetation at the site remains mostly dormant. Early signs of the forthcoming growing
season is evident by the appearance of Redstem Filleree, an early sprouting forb. Five or six
mature Winterfat shrubs were noted on reclaimed areas near Engleville gulch.
Overall, the site appeared in normal condition for the winter season.
3
