Mr. Don McQuillen, the mine superintendent, w as also present. The 118 acre
permit area is located on the wes t side of Empire and along the south side of Clear Creek.
The permit consists of two phases which are being reclaimed concurrent with mining. The
permit boundary is well marked with posts and fences.
PHASE I: Mining in Phase I is nearly completed. Gravel is being excavated from the south
side of the pit and the operator plane to complete mining in the remainder of the northern
side this year. The pit floor consists of a narrow, water filled pit surrounded by a wide,
dry bench above the groundwater table. In the past, the northern pit wall had encroached
too closely to the north to allow for simple cut and fill grading of the slope. Thie area
is being backfilled to achieve the 3:1 slope ratio required in the reclamation plan. The
western end of the pit has been sloped to 3:1 and re-seeded and the resultant vegetative
cover is becoming well established. Topsoil is stockpiled in the southern side of the pit.
PHASE II: A topsoil stockpile of approximately 36,000 cu. yds. is located along the northern
permit boundary. It is stabilized with a thick growth of vegetation. The six settling ponds
were observed. Mr. Marquez explained that no water is discharged from these ponds as all
process water is re-circulated to the wash plan. The ponds are usually cleaned out in the
winter and the fines are used ae pit backfill. According to the operator, no additional
mining is planned for this area.
PLANT SITE: There is a crusher and wash plant and an asphalt batch plant owned by Roaring
Forks Concrete.
I & E Contact Address cc: Carl Mount, DMG
^ CE
NAME LeRov Marquez ^ BL
OPERATOR Mountain Aggregates, Inc. ^ FS
STREET P.O.
