~~ ~':
refuse haul road. As explained earlier, muddy conditions prohibited travel into Ore Refuse Pond 4 area so pumping
j water to the easiest access pond (Refuse Pond 2/3) was the best option. Mr. Routten agreed with our remedietion plan
/ to treat the influent water with floceulent and therby increase retention time in both refuse ponds. Both ponds did not
!~ appear to settle the colloidal solids rapidly enough. ENACT 7883 (Aluminum Chloride) flocculent was added to the
influent at both ponds and 2 smell sediment catc4 basins were constructed at the influent entrance on both the east and
west side of Refuse Poad 2/3.
At approximately 10:30 am ,later in the morning of March 2, Mr. Chervick received a call from Mr. Jim
Chubrillo ,Water Quality Control Division inspector. Mr. Chcrvick informed him of the situation and that all
remediation efforts were being coordinated with the Division of Minerals and Geology. Mr. Chubrillo stated that he was
satisSed with the plan and that Mr. Chervick should send him and Ms. Kalamen a letter explaining the violation and
treatment plan that the Deserado Mine followed. Mr. Chervick agreed to document the treatment plan and to send
copies to all appropriate regnls[ory agencies. This letter, therefore ,serves the purpose of agency notification.
To date both ponds have been pumped down significantly and no discharge has since occurred. The major
svowmelt event has passed and aU the refuse area snow fins melted. Influent water to both ponds now slowed to minimal
to zero flow.
If }'ou have any questions couceming the enclosed data please contact me at (303) 675 - 8431 Extension 247.
Sincerely .
T® Chervick,
Environmental Coordinator
Enclosure
ce: Mike Weigand
1e6Dubbert
Mr.1im Chubrillo, I)isbicl Engineer, Water Quality Control Division
Ms. Barbara Pavldc.
