III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below aze comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made during the
inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection and the facts or
evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Joe Dudash of the Colorado DMG. No one represented the operator
during the field inspection. There was no snow on the flat area of the mine site but there was some snow on the
reclaimed hillslope. The entire site was wet from snowmelt.
Siens and Mazkers
The Bost that holds the mine ID sign has been knocked down and needs to be put back up. Surface disturbance
mazkers were up around the site.
Roads
The paved haul road was in good condition and was passable, as was the bridge over the North Fork of the
Gunnison River. The cable across the road at the top of the hill was down. The gate at the mine site entrance was
locked and the "no trespassing" sign was up on the gate.
Facilities
There were no problems with the run-down mine office building.
Hydrology
There was a good amount of standing water in the sediment pond, to within 6 inches of the primary discharge
pipe invert. The gated valve was closed. The pond embankment was stable., The collection ditch leading into the
pond was well vegetated and had sufficient capacity.
The Edwazds Mine portal spring treatment pond was discharging at about 20 gpm. The dischazge was the usual
orange-colored water that has been shown in the past to be in compliance. The ditch and culvert that brought the
spring water to the treatment pond was functional. The temperature of the spring water was 99 degrees
Fahrenheit at a point 15 feet below where it was coming out of the hillside.
The caps were on both of the alluvial well pipes. There was some snowmelt that ponded azound the west alluvial
well. This ponding should be prevented.
Reclamation
The cracks in the backfilled west portals are continuing to fill up with sediment. There was no odor of
smoldering coal on the reclaimed portal bench.
c:/word/beaz3(insp0306
