(Page 2)
. MINE ID f OR PROSPECTING ID ~ M-91-075
INSPECTION D71TE 11/14/96 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS TAS
OBSERVATIONS
1. The Barnes Pit was inspected at the operator's request since the pit ie nearing
completion of mining.
2. The Barnf~s Pit is permitted for 48.5 acres of disturbance. The poet-mining land use ie
rangeland. 'fhe surrounding land is currently being used for livestock grazing.
3. An entrance sign was posted and the permit boundaries were marked. However, some of the
permit boundary markers were difficult to locate and/or see. The operator was advised to
clearly mark the permit boundary in order that all disturbance will remain within the
permitted area.
4. The pit ie currently active with an estimated disturbance of 8 acres, all within the
permitted ar~aa. Mr. Richards indicated that the mineable reserves of the pit are nearly
exhausted. 7`here appears to be a significantly greater depth of overburded present than was
anticipated at the time of permit issuance.
5. There is a small etockwater catchment basin, built by the landowner, which extends into
the northwestern portion of the permit area. It appears that a small amount of grading will
be necessary during final reclamation to ensure that the elopes surrounding the pond remain
stable.
6. The matter of salvaged topsoil was discussed. The volume currently salvaged dose not
appear to be adequate to provide a uniform soil cover over the 8 disturbed acres. However,
there is a el.gnificent volume of fine sand overburden in the pit bottom which could serve as
a plant growth medium, provided soil amendments are added.
7. Mr. Richards indicated that Riowa County may begin reclamation of the pit in 1997.
I 6 E Contact Addreee
NAME J.D. Wilson
OPERATOR _ Kiowa County
STREET P.O.
