MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: nn_tgaa_tnu
INSPECTION DATE: nAnrrn 9t,..?nn~ INSPECTOR=S INITIALS: nR~
OBSERVATIONS
This was a routine inspection conducted by David Bird and Tony Woldron of DRMS, accompanied by Randy
Moulton, Plant Manager of TXI. The site lies alongside State Highway 93 about 5 miles south of Boulder. The pit
and several material stockpiles are west of the highway, while the plant and offices are east of the highway. A
haul road and conveyor pass beneath the highway. The mining operation extracts Pierre Shale from a pit on
the west side of Hwy 93. The shale is mined with an excavator and transported by truck for crushing and
processing before conveyance to the plant.
Mining and reclamation are ongoing at the lone permitted pit at the site, with the plan being to continue to
expand the pit southward. On visual examination, the aerial extent of the pit appeared to be close to the 15
acre size reported in TXI's 2006 annuol report to DRMS. The annual report also stated that the quarry has
reached the permitted depth, which was visually estimated to be between 200 and 300 ft. Concurrent
reclamation, consisting of mulching/reseeding, is being implemented on previously mined slopes toward the
northern end of the pit. The highwall appeared stable at a slope of about 1:1, and no evidence of problematic
erosion was observed. Na jointing or faulting was observed that could adversely affect the highwall stability. A
minor amount of water was standing in the pit floor, and was explained to have originated from recent
precipitation. Mr. Moulton said that no ground-water inflow to the pit occurs, and from our vantage pit on the
rim, no highwall seeps were seen. Several small material stockpiles pre scattered around the pit's southern rim,
which are transitory in nature and are processed as plant capacity allows. Haul roads are well maintained to
prevent dust generation. The boundary of the operation appeared to be adequately marked. The weed
problem noted in a previous inspection report seems to be under control.
The plant is not within the boundaries of the permitted area due for inspection, so no inspection was performed
at the plant.
I & E Contact Address
NAME: Randv Moulton -Plant Manager
OPERATOR: TXI Boulder.
STREET: 1 1798 Hwy 93
CITY/STATE/ZIP: Rnulriar Cn Rn3n3
cc: r CE
r BL
r Fs
r HW
r HMWMD (CH)
r SE
r WOCD (CH)
r OTHER
