L
• •
(Page 21
MINE ID ry OR PFtOSPECTING ID k M-1991-079
INSPECTION DATE 10/18/00 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS WHE
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection occurred in response to operator request. Tom Logue accompanied the DMG
inspector throughout the inspection. The Mule Farm Gravel Pit is approved for 89 acres permit
area, of which approximately 42 acres to be affected. Reclamation will result in a 35 acre pond
to support wildlife habitat and recreation post mining land use. DMG holds 5124,488 financial
warranty. Op~~rations were active.
Records The original permit was issued on 2/18/92 to Elam Construction with 6 stipulations. The
6 stipulations resulted from a Technical Revision to the application, approved by DMG on 1/13/92.
The TR incorporated the contemporaneous reclamation requirements of 10 acres major disturbance,
4 acres modf;rate disturbance, and 4 acres minor disturbance, resulting in 573,380 financial
warranty. On 9/13/99, DMG approved TR-02, removing the contemporaneous reclamation
requirements, eliminating the previous 6 stipulations to the permit, and increasing the financial
warranty to S 124,488. DMG records do not indicate additional revisions or modifications to the
permit.
Signs & Markers Mine identification sign was posted at the mine entrance. The boundary of the
affected land:; were sufficiently delineated. Mining operations were confined to approved areas.
Mine entrance road was well maintained.
Pit Area The pit exhibited internal drainage. Pit drainage was being pumped to the Gunnison
River. The operator had completed backfilling and grading of the pond inslopes along
approximately 1,200' of the south pit wall. The operator has been monitoring revegetation test
plots, located along the southwest corner of the permit area, to evaluate the success of various
revegetation 1:echniques.
Financial Warl•anty The existing 5124,488 financial warranty resulted from DMG's 2/18/99 cost
estimation. DMG's 2/18/99 cost estimation included reclamation cost for the entire 42 acres
affected area. Since the time of the cost estimation the operator has completed backfill and
grading for approximately 1,200' of pit inslope (2 acres) and revegetation over approximately 3
acres area. Therefore, the existing 5124,488 financial warranty is sufficient to ensure reclamation.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to the Division of Minerals and Geology, 701
Camino del Rio, Room 125, Durango, Colorado 81301, Attn: Wally Erickson, phone no. 970-247-
5469.
I & E Contact Address
NAME Thomas A.
