~,..- -.
III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made during the
inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection and the facts or
evidence supporting the enforcement action.
There was only scattered minor rill erosion on reclaimed slope areas of the No.1 and No. 2
mines. In general, the drainage modifications implemented during the 2000 reclamation
project appeared to function very successfully, and excessive erosion was prevented.
Erosion was limited to the drainage channels, and the erosion that did occur within the
channels does not appear to be out of character with the steeply incised ephemeral drainage
arroyos that are typical in the bookcliffs.
Revegetation
As described in previous inspections, establishment of seeded shrubs and grasses on areas
of the No. 1 mine bench and the access road which were graded, roughened, and seeded in
2000 has been very successful. Older reclaimed areas vary from very successful on lower,
relatively level areas, to spotty on steeper slope areas. However, over-all revegetation
success is good, with sufficient establishment of desirable species in and adjacent to the
less successful areas to allow for an increase in cover with time. One encouraging
development noted this inspection is that large numbers of seedling fourwing saltbush
plants have germinated this year, in the vicinity of the scattered mature plants on the steep
outslope of the No. 1 bench. The established mature plants are the obvious seed source.
For the most part, the new seedlings are clustered on the old dozer gouges that were
constructed during a DMG reclamation project in the mid 1990's.
O
