Mine water treatment ponds (Long Pond, Tl, and T2) - The three treatment ponds are part of the
4.3-acre Developed Water Area that has been approved as a permanent part of the site. The ponds
were at operational capacity and appeazed to be functioning properly both before (April 17) and after
(Apri120) Mine No. 3 discharge was routed to the Long Pond. The Long Pond presumably was
dischazging to treatment pond T 1 via a submerged drain at the south end of Long Pond which could not
be seen due to the thick growth of cattails in the pond. The flow into Tl (from the Long Pond) also
could not be seen, presumably because the inlet of T1 was covered with algae. Tl was dischazging to
T2 via two pvc pipes and an earthen channel. T2 was discharging from a pvc pipe at the former CDPS
Outfall 001 location on the hillslope above North Thompson Creek. From the 001 pipe, the water was
flowing down the slope to the creek. Water in the treatment ponds appeared suitable for use by
livestock and wildlife, based on field pazameters measured during the inspection (see following table).
Table 1-Field parameters measured during the inspection. All dischazges were cleaz
water, with the exception of the Mine No. 3 discharge which was slightly cloudy before
and after routing to the Long Pond. nm =not measured.
Discharge
E
T
p' Total Fe (mg/l,
Location Date (visual pH S
(Ju) oF
( ) using
estimate Chemets kit
Mine No. 1 discharge from
from air shaft into N.
" 0 (small
Thompson Creek via 36 4/17/07 pool) 6.8 1434 52 run
culvert next to Mine No. 1
ortal
Mine No. 1 dischazge from 4/17/07 15 7.4 2198 56 nm
pipe into Long Pond
Discharge from treatment
pond 2 (to North
Thompson Creek, former 4/17/07 15 7.2 1990 52 nm
CDPES outfall 001), while
only Mine No. 1 was
dischaz in to Lon Pond
Mine No. 3 discharge to
ground from pipe across
road from Mine No. 3 4/17/07 10 6.8 1434 56 7
portal azea, before re-
routing to Long Pond.
S
4/18
l
li
(
was sp
amp
e on
t
from lab sample) 4/18/07 10 7.0 1400 52 7
North Thompson Creek,
side channel immediately

downstream from Mine 4/18/07 nm 7.4 269 60 0
No. 3 discharge
5
