•• (Page 2) ••
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-77-484
INSPECTION DATE 04/01/99 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS AJw
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was conducted by Tony Waldron of DMG at the request of the operator to
determine if this site would be eligible for full performance warranty release. The site is
located approximately 7 miles west of Springfield, Colorado.
The site was last inspected in 1997 and at that time the inspector noted that serious erosion
was occurring on the regraded pit slopes. The condition has not improved much to date and
some work still needs to be done before this site will be eligible for release. The slope
grade appears to be 3H:1V or flatter and should support vegetative establishment, however,
there are numerous rills present throughout the backfilled area. There is some vegetation
growing inbetween the rills where the soil has not eroded down to the pit bottom but it has
not filled in to the point that it is stopped the rill erosion from occurring. The operator
was planning on filling in the rills with bedding straw from the county fair to try and slow
down or stop the erosion. This may help some but the slopes really need to be regraded or
filled in with additional topsoil and seeded to completely stop the erosion. When this has
been completed the operator can contact the Division to re-inspect the site for a possible
release. In the mean time, the erosion is going to be cited as a problem on page three of
this report along with appropriate corrective actions.
Suggestions would be to haul in additional soil and fill in the rills and gullies and re-seed
before spreading out the straw that is stockpiled on site. If a reliable supply of soil
cannot be easily obtained, the existing soil on site should be respread over the sloped areas
before re-seeding. The seed mix currently contains only two species of grass. This should
be revised to include several additional grasses such as sideoats grama, bufEalograss,
switchgrass, galleta, intermediate wheatgrass, little bluestem, etc. This should provide an
opportunity for better vegetative establishment. The installation of an upland diversion
ditch around the top of the pit may also help by preventing excessive flows over the sloped
areas where the worst rill erosion is occurring. Also, once the rills are regraded, the
placement of some contour furrows may help to prevent new rills from forming until the
vegetation becomes established.
As previously stated, once the rills are repaired and seeded, the site could be re-inspected
for performance warranty release.
I & E Contact Address
NAME Charles Wait
OPERATOR Baca County
STREET P.O.
