(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-81-302
INSPECTION DATE 12-27-96 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS CBM
OBSERVATIONS
This was an inspection of the southernmost settling pond areas that Western Mobile is
thinking of changing the reclamation plan end land use for. The operator is thinking of
changing the end land use to wetland (wildlife habitat) . The inspection was done at the
operator's request.
The four settling ponds inspected are used to settle out sediment from the wash plant
operation. Slurry is piped up to the ponds and water is allowed to flow back towards the
wash plant where it is reused. The settling ponds are located within the 100 year floodplain
of South Boulder Creek. The slurry pipe discharge is moved as the ponds are filling with
sediment. Discharge occurs in 5 or 6 different places within each pond which causes each
pond to exhibit variable substrate from coarse to fine sand with minor amounts of silt and
clay. Wetland plants have started to establish on the top three or southernmost ponds in
this area. Western Mobile is trying to determine the average groundwater level so that
standing water on the settling pond area is mostly eliminated.
The operator's representative indicated that blowing sand has been somewhat of a problem in
the past but that with revegetation and water management that this problem has been abated.
Western Mobile is encouraged to continue these practices to reduce the amount of wind blowing
of the ponds.
No problems were noted during the inspection.
I & E Contact Address cc: A1i N {.-✓4' sCoi.
