Colowyo C-1981-019
19 June 2006
Pg 3/6
Hydrologic Balance (cont.): -Sump 5 contained a small puddle of water at the time
of the inspection. The sump was stable at the time of the inspection.
- The West Pit Pond (NPDES 008A) contained a small puddle of water and was not
discharging at the time of the inspection. The presettling basin at the inlet of the
pond contained water about one foot below the spillway to the West Pit Pond. The
pond embankment was well vegetated and stable at the time of the inspection. No
erosional problems were noted on the embankment at the time of the inspection.
The emergency spillway is a riprapped channel. The spillway was stable and in good
condition.
-The East Taylor Pond (NPDES O1 OA) contained a small pool of water at the bottom of
the pond and was not discharging. The West Pit contains all of the water from this
pond's watershed. The pond embankment was well vegetated and stable at the
time of the inspection. No erosional problems were noted on the embankment at
the time of the inspection. The emergency spillway is a riprapped channel. The
spillway was stable and in good condition.
-The Gossard Pond (NPDES 003A) contained water approximately three feet below
the riser pipe and was not discharging at the time of the inspection. The pond
embankment was well vegetated and stable and there were no erosional problems
noted at the time of the inspection. The emergency spillway is a 12" culvert. There is
again a good deal of sediment at the inlet of this pond. It will probably need to be
cleaned this fall.
-The Rail Loop Pond (NPDES OObA) contained water approximately three feet below
the discharge pipe and was not discharging at the time of the inspection. The pond
embankment was well vegetated and stable at the time of the inspection. No
erosional problems were noted on the embankment.
-The Stoker Siding Pond (NPDES OOSA) contained water approximately four feet
below the discharge pipe but was discharging just a trickle through the weep-hole
(the flow was so low that it was not measurable on the flume). The pond
embankment was well vegetated and appeared to be stable at the time of the
inspection. No erosional problems were noted on the pond embankment.
- Culverts K and M were checked, as these are the two culverts that seem to
constantly need cleaning. Both culverts were clean. One possible problem,
however, is that there are large piles of dirt at the edge of these culverts. During a
storm event this dirt could go back into these culverts and plug them back up. It is
recommended that these piles of dirt at the edges of culverts K amn M be moved to
the pit. If there are any other of these piles at any of the other culverts, it should be
moved as well.
Backfilling and Grading: -The operator continues to finish the regrading work at the
south east portion of the East Pit. The operator is recontouring this area, pulling spoil
up from the bottom of the ridge and grading it to its final, approved topography with
a dragline. At the time of the inspection the 101 dragline was moving spoil from the
east edge of the pit to the southeast edge of the pit, along the low wall area. The
operator is completing this work as time permits.
