(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-2001-021
INSPECTION DATE 05/24/2006 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS DEG
OBSERVATIONS
Larry Champ and Jesse Stackhouse, Washington County District Road Foremen, accompanied Deb E. Gonima of the DMG
during this inspection of Washington County Permit Number M-2001-021. The site is located approximately 10 miles north and
1 mile west of Akron, CO at the intersection of County Roads DD and 31. The permit area consists of approximately 270 acres.
This is the first inspection to take place for this permit since mining has begun. The operators state that this pit supplies
material for all three districts. The mine identification sign has been properly posted and contains the required information. The
site is currently active, material has been stockpiled on the permit area and some of it has been removed recently, although
there was no equipment on site at the time of the inspection. Of the 270 acres permitted, onlyapproximately 10 acres are being
mined currently, in the northeastern portion of the permit boundary (see photos 1-2). A fence line delineates the permit
boundary (see photos 1 & 18).
The topsoil has been stockpiled in a crescent shape across the northern permit boundary between the fence line and the active
mining zone (see photo series 5-17). The topsoil stockpile has cultivated a substantial weed population, and appears to not
have been seeded with the NRCS recommended mix. However, the operator states that the topsoil stockpile will be regraded
by fall 2006, as they anticipate completing mining in this portion of the site by late summer. This inspector recommended fall
seeding, once the topsoil is replaced. One item of note is the weed population on site in both naturaUundisturbedsreas and the
mined portions of the site (see photo 2). The entire mine site, disturbed or not, along with the surrounding natural areas are
heavily populated with mainly cheat grass and thistle. This site appears to be a sink, rather than a source of these noxious
weeds, given the ubiquitous nature of the weeds on the adjacent natural areas.
The operators confirm that no mining will occur in Brunker Creek (dry creek bed). Constructed haul road runs from the
southeast corner at Co. Rd. 31, north along the eastern fence line, crosses Brunker Creek, then continues eastward along and
to the north of the creek bed (see photos 3, 4 & 18).
The operators have requested a copy of all permit documents DMG currently holds for M-2001-012. These will be provided via
one CD, along with this inspection report.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to Deb E. G6nima at the Division of Minerals and Geology, Denver
Office, 1313 Sherman Street, Room 215, Denver, Colorado 80203, phone number 303-866-4179.
I & E Contact Address
NAME Mr. Larry Champ and Mr. Jesse Stackhouse
OPERATOR Washington County
STREET 150 Ash Street
CITY/STATE/ZIP Akron, CO 80720
cc: Carl Mount, DMG via a-mail
cc:
^ CE
^ BL
^ FS
^ HW
^ HMWMD (CH)
^ SE
^ WOCD (CH)
^ OTHER
