The
operator's representative was contacted about the inspection, and was present during the inspection.
The required permit ID sign was posted along the access road to the pit (though the sign was so faded it was nearly
illegiblel. The operator might consider repainting it soon. The fencelines and ditch delineating the eastern and southern
boundaries were indicated. Activities have nearly reached the northern boundary in the NE corner. There is no activity
outside the boundary
The pit continues to grow to the south and west, where there is still significant room to expand. The pit floor was fairly
level, but may be planned to be deeper in some areas. The eastern wall of the pit has been sloped to a stable gradient,
though it is not fully reclaimed. Most of the rest of the highwalls in the pit (south and west) are nearly vertical.
There is a large amount of processed material stockpiled in the pit, which occupies much of the available working area.
There is still a small crusher in the pit, as well as a diesel tank (bermed and emptyl, tube containers, storage trailer, and
diesel generator. There is no soil contamination from fuel handling.
The unmined SW part of the permit area is partially occupied by the operator's own agricultural equipment and parts. The
presence of this is not a problem, since it predates the permit activities, is kept separate, and there is no mining activity
occurring there. No is no required clean-up of this (under this permit), and no bond to be posted for this.
It has been four years since the last bond amount review, and it is scheduled for review again. The present bond is S7,000,
which may be sufficient for the limited amount of outstanding reclamation to perform here. The bond will be recalculated,
and if an increase is indicated, the new figures will be sent to the operator. The site is kept clean and orderly.
The operator is aware of the knapweed on the upper part of the eastern slope, and should continue to monitor it closely and
treat it. Weed control efforts could be included, along with the mining and reclamation activity, in the annual reports.
There were no additional items observed or discussed. No problems exist at this time. All responses or questions about
this inspection report should be directed to this inspector at the Division's Durango Field Office.
