MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: rn-1g77-~vn
INSPECTION DATE: ~/~5/Po INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: ~_
This was a normal monitoring inspection conducted by Tony Waldron of DMG along with Joe Welte, Matt Welte, and ]oe
Gagliano representing Summit Brick. The site is located approximately 7.5 miles northwest of Canon City, Colorado. The
pit is situated along the out-slope base of a small hogback type formation. The affected area was properly delineated
with visible markers and there was a mine identification sign posted at the entrance to the site.
The clay deposits are layered at the same angle of the hogback uplift. Mining is conducted by removing the topsoil and
any overburden which usualty exposes the clay layers which are then removed and stakpiled for removal on an as
needed basis. The clay deposit appears to be mined up to a point where it becomes too steep to safely remove the
deposit. The clay deposit also appears to extend dawn so that when it is removed, it essentially leaves a trench at the
base of the hogback. Reclamation is achieved by backfilling this trench and sloping the remaining material up the mined
side of the hogback at an acceptable slope followed by topsoil replacement and seeding.
There is an area along the southeast side of the affected area that has been reclaimed and appears to be doing very well.
There appears to be ample topsoil available to provide an adequate amount of growth medium when final reclamation is
implemented.
One problem that was identified and will require follow-up is the infrequent use of explosives on the site. In accordance
with Rule 6.5(4) of the Construction Materials Rules and Regulations of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board; "At
sites where blasting is part of the proposed mining or reclamation plan, the applicant shall demonstrate through
appropriate blasting, vibration, geotechnical, and structural engineering analyses, that off-site areas will not be adversely
affected by blasting". Since explosives are used, even if infrequently, the appropriate analyses will need to be
incorporated into the permit application via a technical revision. The details of this submittal are included on page three
of this report.
~~~ rnctal ~ X91 3-00 00-3
I & E Contact Address
NAME: Joseph C.
