III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below aze comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made during the
inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspecton and the facts or
evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Joe Dudash of the Colorado DMG. No one
represented the operator during the field inspection. There was no activity on site.
Hvdrolog_y
There was a little snow and ice in the sediment pond. The gated primazy dischazge tube
was closed. Spillways were functional. The pond inslopes and outslopes were moderately
to well vegetated and appeazed to be stable.
The Edwazds Portal spring water treatment pond was dischazging into the North Fork of
the Gunnison at about 20 to 30 gpm. The discharge was dark orange in color. This
discharge has been found to be in compliance with NPDES standards and receiving
stream standazds in the past. The water level in the pond was one foot below the
horizontal pipe. The pond inslopes and outslopes were stable but were spazsely vegetated.
The spillways of the treatment pond were functional. There is a section of timber that has
floated under the horizontal pipe in the treatment pond. This timber should be removed
since it could lift against the pipe if the water level rose or the pond surface froze.
The collection ditch that leads into the sediment pond was well grassed and had sufficient
capacity. There were no problems with alluvial wells AW-1 and AW-3. There was no
ponded water around AW-3.
The Edwards Portal west spring was not flowing. The Edwazds Portal east spring was
flowing at about 20 to 30 gpm, The spring water was dark orange in color and its
temperature at the slide was 81 degrees Fahrenheit.
Roads
The cable was across the entrance road. There was a small boulder on the road but it did
not prevent access to the site. The bridge was passable. The gate was closed but not
locked.
c:/word/bear3/vnsp 1202
