Letter to Luke Russell 2 March 28, 1994
non-altered talus is selected, and should further assure that the
talus selected is durable. In order to verify rock durability,
Homestake should conduct and document standard field durability
testing, e.g., hand lens examination, hardness evaluation, and
field hammer testing. In addition, the Division recommends that
representative samples be subjected to the Los Angeles Abrasion
Test and Point Load Testing. Since the riprap source is to be
talus that has been exposed many cycles of freezing and thawing, no
Freeze-Thaw, Slake Durability, or Sulfate Soundness testing is
indicated. If any fresh (e.g., recently quarried) rock is to be
utilized, such testing may be necessary.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Allen C. Sorenson
Reclamation Specialist
C:\WP51\BULLDOG.FIN
