It is also my understanding that
the pit site and other disturbance areas will be topsoiled and
reseeded.
The Division does understand that because M & M Mining Company
was issued a discharge permit from the Department of Health all
concerns we expressed regarding potential water quality problems
should be more appropriately addressed with the Department of
Health rather then Mined Land Reclamation Division.
The only other concerns not addressed as a result of the
hearing were whether topsoil has been and is being stockpiled on-
site, and whether reclamation of mining activities covered in the
original permit has been initiated. The Division has beer. unable
to determine whether topsoil has been stockpiled, and if it has,
whether it has been in place long enough to require temporary
seeding to reduce problems with erosion. Regarding reclamation,
we are unclear whether sufficient acreage has been disturbed to
require initiation of reclamation procedures prior to commencement
of additional mining activities. Clarification on these issues
would be most helpful.
As per your suggestion, I do believe it would be beneficial
for us to accompany MLRD personnel when these sites are inspected.
You indicated to me that, several adjacent sites are inspected in
a single day. This would be very workable for us. We request that
you coordinate with us when these inspections are planned as I
believe the opportunity would be both educational and informative.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES.
