On such a drive in late September of 1982 we saw for the first time the <br />magnificent view of South Park from the summit of Kenosha Pass. We drove to <br />Fairplay and decided to look for property and a cabin. Later that year we found a <br />place and have since been frequent weekend residents of South Park. <br />Nearly as striking as South Park's beauty is the evidence of mining in the last 120 <br />years. My children understand that the mine tailings are an aftermath of a mining <br />period when people didn't have an understanding of the fragile high country <br />environment. I used to tell them that it would be unlikely such a process would take <br />place today. I told them that water resources, tourism, hunting, fishing, and <br />preservation of natural beauty would combine to influence wise politicians in not <br />permitting such operations. "~ <br />Th nowstorm slowly devouring the <br />mountainside along the north side of Highway 9 between Fairplay and Alma. They are <br />making mountains of tailings and have done nothing to reclaim the mined area. Jim <br />Jones (Game Warden) has passed the word to a lot of us that the Mined Land <br />Reclamation Division (MLRD) is considering amending the original reclamation plan <br />for the open pit gold mine. I am vehemently opposed to any such alteration. In fact, I <br />think they should be strengthened so that they reclaim the land as they finish each 8 <br />acre plot. <br />This outfit is here for aone-time profit and will leave when the profit margin dictates. <br />There are a growing number of homeowners and taxpayers in Park County that feel <br />
