r
Slurco Corp.
cJo Mr. Jerry Koblitz
Greystone Development Consultants
5990 Greenwood Plaza, Suite 250
Englewood, CO 80111
C-81-026
Canadian Strip
1/30/97
Complete inspection
Mitchell S. Rollings, 370, OSM
Janet Binns, DMG
The Canadian Strip is a Federal mine and the permit covers 155 acres; 81 acres of which have
been disturbed by mining activities. All disturbance has been reclaimed and Phase II bond release
has been granted. The initial bond amount was for $746,450. A Phase I release of $447,870 and
two Phase II releases of $63,448 and $123,164 have been granted. The bond is in the form of a
letter of credit from Norwest.
Mine records and the application are kept at the Jackson County Courthouse. The permit states
that inspection reports and enforcement actions may be obtained from DMG or Greystone.
The NPDES permit, COG-850014, was terminated 9/25/96. The annual pond certifications were
last done on 11/1/96. The fourth quarter pond inspections were conducted 11/1/96 and the third
quarter pond inspections were conducted 7/22/96. The two ponds are permanent to serve the
post-mining land use of wildlife and rangeland. The access road to the site is also permanent.
The certificate of insurance is with National Union Fire Insurance and expires 9/1/97.
The site was snow covered, making observation of ground and vegetation conditions virtually
impossible. Some MSEIR Block 24 categories checked "1" were not observed in total, but there
were no observed indications of problems given the snow cover. Snow had been mostly wind
swept from the embankment crest of Pond 1 and grasses could be seen. The pond's spillway
systems were seen through the snow and there were no indications of any problems. Pond 2 is in
the lee of a small rise and appeared to have more snow cover.
No violations were observed during this inspection.
