Piland and Associates), and the data is transformed by ESI
into monthly moisture content at various known depths.
Although neutron probe access tubes were installed in all plots where the moisture
measurements were needed, neutron probe measurements are only carried out quarterly at this site.
This was in part based on the assumption that a newer technology (I'DR probes} could provide more
frequent moisture data at a lower cost. If the TDRs proved to be unworkable or unreliable, the.
frequency of neutron probe readings could be increased. They do provide a well accepted basis for
comparison. However, whenever comparisons were made between the TDRs and the neutron probe
results, the data show that both systems indicate similaz moisture migration patterns. The TDRs
however can see the changes on a much tighter frequency and at a much tighter spatial location.
Accordingly, there has been no need to increase the frequency of neutron probe readings.
LACHEL FELICE & Associates
