a
III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the
inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Joe Dudash of the Colorado DNIG. Due to an error
on my part, the operator was not notified of my presence on the mine site until after the
inspection. There was no activity on site. It had snowed several inches the night before. Snow
covered the entire mine site.
Roads
The main road leading into the mine site was snow covered but passable. The mine gate was
locked.
Siens and Markers
The mine ID sign was up at the entrance to the mine site and contained the correct information.
Facilities
There has not been any recent activity at the former mine office. In the future, Oxbow may
convert the former office to a coal lab for the Sanborn Creek Mine.
Hvdroloev
The snow\ice level in the pond was up to the bottom of the primary dischazge pipe. The gated
valve was closed. The embankment was snow covered but no obvious signs of instability were
observed. Collection ditches were snow covered.
Sloe Stability
There was no steam or smoke coming out of the slide area. There were three seeps flowing out
of the slide, however. The east seep flowed at an estimated rate of ~ gpm. The middle seep flow
was measured at ] 0 gpm. The west seep flow rate was measured at 15 gpm. Measurement was
estimated with a bucket and stopwatch. There was some snow melt associated with the flows.
At the outfall of the collected seep water, the flow rate was 30 gpm. The water color was orange.
The TDS was measured at 3.30 mS at a temperature of 57 degrees Fahrenheit. The TDS
instrument had been calibrated in the field. The total soluble iron was estimated at 1.0 ppm,
using a color comparator test.
c:\wp61 \beaz\insp0199
