STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 27 5
Denver, Colorado 80203
Phone: (303) 866-3567
FAX: (303) 832-8706
October 10, 2003
Robert Shevling
Seneca Coal Company
P.O. Box 670
Hayden, Colorado 81639
RE: Seneca II-W Mine (Permit C-1982-057)
Inspection Report Error
Dear Mr. Shevling:
This letter is to bring to your attention an error in my most recent Seneca II-W inspection
report (issuance date 10/3/03). At the bottom of page 3 of the Comments-Compliance
section of the report, I stated that gully erosion repairs are to be completed "by the end of
November". The approved permit in fact specifies that rill and gully stabilization is to be
"implemented by July 1 of each year...and completed by November 1 or until weather
conditions restrict operations" (Tab 22, page 34).
As you know, rills and gullies that require stabilization work have been identified on the
2003 rill and gully survey map, and additional gullies requiring regrading and stabilization
were identified during several Division inspections over the summer. As of my most recent
inspection, it did not appear that stabilization work had been initiated at a number of the
locations of concern. It is important that the stabilization work be initiated promptly and
substantially completed by November 1, to ensure that the work is completed before the
onset of restrictive weather conditions.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
Sincere ~~
Daniel T.
